8 NATIONAL Medals 1 GOLD , 2 SILVER+ 5 BRONZE
June 30 2012
Tuggerah KIDO-MINGARA JUDO ACADEMY with 8 NATIONAL Medals 1 GOLD , 2 SILVER+ 5 BRONZE
The WIN Entertainment Centre in Wollongong, NSW was the venue for this year Australian Judo Titles. Over 600 players of the best ‘Judoka’ in the Junior and Senior divisions from every State as well as visiting International athletes competed over the long weekend, displaying their skills and entertained the public with spirited bouts. Judo NSW covered the event live on Internet TV on all 3 mats.
Seven (7) players from the TUGGERAH’s KIDO-MINGARA JUDO ACADEMY wore the NSW blues to represent the State, several testing their skills in older age divisions and for one it was the first time.
At 16 and already his fifth national LIAM YOKOYAMA, re-confirm his dominance in the 60kg junior men u/19 division by adding another GOLD medal to his collection. He has made a cleen sweep this year not losing any bouts, combined with a good draw, gave him the confidence to also do well in the Senior men. After a spirited start and winning with technically showcase throws Liam was relegated to the repechage rounds. He came in too loose and relaxed on his VIC opponent of similar speed and style, who took the opportunity to convert the error into a winning throw. Liam had to settle for a BRONZE and it signals a start of many interesting future encounters.
His sister Angelina YOKOYAMA, from Bonnels Bay, was unable to make her designated weight 48kg division but did remarkably well to win bouts in the heavier 52kg cadets. At the end of the day KIDO had two Yokoyama’s on the podium during the nationals because Angelina fought strongly through the repechage rounds to win a BRONZE.
Also at 16, Carolin Hain, a previous Junior medallist, after missing last years Championship due to injury, was keen to re-establish her position of the 48kg division. Attempting this year in 3 categories -the u/17 cadet; u/19 and Senior women. She had honed her skills with consistent training at the Tuggerah Academy, and applied them with confidence. Caroline again made it a positive experience representing Kido and NSW with distinction by winning 2 medals. A BRONZE in the cadets and with her overwhelming bursts of energy overpowered all but one of her opponents to capture the SILVER medal in the u/19 women.
In the U/16 Senior Boy Neeson NAIDOO from Watanobbi, for whom this was his 2nd appearance at a junior Nationals, had prepared thoroughly, training every day giving himself the best possible chance to do well. His improvement was apparent from his first bout where he threw for ippon [full point] with uchimata. He continued through one of the largest division of 25 players in that style to reach the finals, winning all bouts by throwing for ‘ippon’ full points. In the final Neeson encountered a strong WA opponent who was able to counter one of his attacks for a minor score. By losing narrowly in the finals meant Neeson had to settle for SILVER but it also provided a skill development list for next year. His sister Kassiea NAIDOO performed strong for her first time at a national, being just out of the medals, but gained valuable experience .
Junior women 52Kg - Melinda BROWN had an interrupted training preparation which sapped her fitness this year. She relied heavily on her smooth transition to groundwork and submission techniques, which are extremely strong and produced wins. Melinda performed with her innate strong determination and focus, achieving a BRONZE Medal. She now will intensify her specific training to work on tachi waza [throws] in Japan to prepare for next year.
In the U/12 Junior Boys, Daniel VILLANI secured his first National BRONZE Medal in spirited bouts in the u/34kg division. He fought first with the ACT player and won with full point (ippon] with a combination. In the second encounter Daniel was for the first time exposed to tactics that, unfortunately by the time he adapted, cost him the bout and which relegated him to the repechage rounds. With his losing this bout to the eventual champion, quickly regained his form by winning with skilful throws. Going through to his first medal with full point scores, was a positive experience and by easily re-focusing after a setback, will serve him well in the future.
Coaching director, Pete Acciari, emphasized the clubs main aim is to attain the maximum potential from each student and help them find their “inner strength“
